The Lanna Kingdom as well as the Kingdom of Siam were historically independent Tai states with a high cultural standard. Both societies had their traditional Tai law. In the course of history, the Lanna Kingdom in the north was incorporated into the Kingdom of Siam, which later changed its name to Thailand. The indigenous law was affected by the policy of the new state.
